What Are PV Mods

A PV mod is also known as a personal vaporizer modification, or a modified electronic cigarette. With the ever increasing popularity of electronic cigarettes, the limitations of the look a like (resembling a traditional cigarette) e-cigs have prompted a whole industry of manufacturers producing bigger and better alternatives.

A PV mod is simply a way to utilize bigger, longer lasting batteries, in order to be able to “vape” longer between battery charges…and also produce more vapor.

The two basic designs consist of either a tube, (cylindrical), or a box in shape. Depending on the batteries utilized, a mod will operate at either 3.7, 5.0, 6.0 or higher voltages. The latest wave in pv mods are the variable voltage (v.v.) designs. The v.v. mods allow the user to be able to adjust the output voltage to their “taste“, or preference.

Another aspect that others are looking for in a pv mod is the ability to store more e-liquid, or nicotine liquid, with the use of tanks, or feeder systems. These provide a constant source of e-liquid that will usually last a couple days to a week.

If you are looking for a pv mod, keep in mind that they are not all alike.

The quality of construction, and performance varies widely…with companies and individuals coming and going at a relatively fast pace.

So what should you look for in a PV mod?

  • History – I think the number one thing to keep in mind when shopping for a PV mod is the history of the individual or company. How long have they been producing mods? What do others think of their mods? Is it an individual, or a company? Do they stand behind their product? One of the best sources of information concerning these questions can be found at E-Cigarette Forum
  • Construction – What material is the PV mod constructed from? Is it plastic, wood, brass, aluminum, or stainless steel? There are pros and cons to each, and may have a positive or negative impact on the aesthetics.
  • Design – Is it a tube or box? Is it designed to utilize tanks or feeder systems? Is it all mechanical, or are there electronics involved? How is it operated? Where is the button placed? These are factors to consider in the daily operation of the device.
  • Voltage – The more popular run at either 3.7 or 6.0 volts (depending on the batteries used), with 5.0 volts resisted also very popular. The newest addition would be the v.v. mods, allowing on the fly adjustment of the voltage.

Okay…now I’m confused
Finding the right PV mod can seem like a daunting task for the beginner, but there is hope. The vaping community is very helpful in this regard. With a little research, identifying what you want out of a mod, and what aesthetics are important will go a long way in narrowing your choices in what will meet your expectations.
